explore the process
1. Research
I studied impressionism paintings and took major inspiration from Loving Vincent (2017), directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman. I wanted the painting to come alive so I practiced different painting techniques and new brushes while collecting inspirational photos as part of my mood board.
2. Pre-Production
During pre-production, I was focused on conceptual art so mapping out the storyboards was challenging. I used vibrant colors in the character designs to express the mental state of each character. The abuser had multiple character designs including creature forms representing when their abusive state. I added a detail where whenever the lover looks at the abuser, he appears normal, but to us, we see see his true form.
2. Production
During production, I experimented with two frames per second to four frames per second depending on the scene. I painted each frame and since the painting had to appear if it was coming to life, I re-painted each frame including the backgrounds and the characters, so this process took me the longest. I also experimented with smudging colors together to transition onto the next scene.
4. Post-production
During post-production, I cut and edited each shot in InShot. I added fades during transitions, and experimented with speeding up and slowing down animations. My favorite effect was when I distorted the scene where the woman is dancing in the sky. It conveyed a more surreal and dreamlike tone to the animation, which was exactly what I wanted.
